In a bid to make up for the lost market share, Samsung is bringing in many new devices in the market. The new devices try to move away from the conventional Samsung devices we have seen until now and will prove to be strong players in the market. They recently launched the Samsung Galaxy Alpha with a metal frame which was something fresh for the manufacturer. Then they introduced the full metal bodied Galaxy A3 and A5. These were another duo of firsts for the Korean smartphone giant.

Samsung Galaxy E5

Now at the CES, they have introduced few more interesting devices like the Galaxy E5 and Galaxy E7. These are mid-range devices with pretty mediocre specifications but nice features to cater the young buyers. The E7 is bigger with a 5.5 inch AMOLED display. It has got a 13 megapixel camera with a 5 megapixel secondary camera. It comes with a 1.2 GHz quad core processor and 2 GB of RAM. The E5 is smaller in size with a 5 inch display. The primary camera also has slightly lower resolution at 8 megapixels. Rest of the hardware is pretty much the same as the E7. Wetake a closer look at the Galaxy E5 and list down some of its features that make it unique.

Large AMOLED display

This is the very first thing you will notice about this device (after the design of course). Usually you find AMOLED displays on high end Samsung devices. Even other manufacturers tend to put these displays on high end devices only due to the high costs involved. Call it personal taste but for everyday use, AMOLED displays are much better than the other kind of displays you find out there. Some would say that they have got oversaturated colours but that makes a major difference when you watch lot of videos and share lot of images. Apart from that these displays offer you excellent contrast ratios and are very legible even for outdoor use. The high contrast ratio allows for easy reading on these displays. And the best part is that the blacks don’t turn into grey even if you boost the brightness. Saving power is easy as you can just put on a black background and a black theme and you end up powering off a large number of pixels.

The Galaxy E5 has got a 5 inch display with 720p resolution. This would give you a pixel density of around 294 ppi which is pretty average. The contrast ratio is infinity just like any other AMOLED display and the colours are very well saturated. The good thing is that it isn’t oversaturated like many other AMOLED displays and the colours are close to real. The large size of the display makes it suitable for reading and watching videos.

64 bit chipset

With all the new smartphones moving towards the 64 bit chipsets, Samsung couldn’t be left behind. This new smartphone comes with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 chipset which is a 64 bit chipset. It has got a quad core processor running at 1.2 GHz of peak clock speed. Along with that it gets 1.5 GB of RAM which should be plenty to handle almost everything you throw at it. It gets 16 GB of internal storage along with micro SD card slot which supports external storage up to 64 GB. All the usual connectivity options are on offer here. There is no support for 4G or NFC though.

Dual SIM

The Galaxy E5 offers dual SIM support which eliminates the need of keeping multiple devices. With the newer dual SIM Samsung devices, they have also improved the number of options they offer to manage both the SIM cards individually. Apart from the option to choose different notifications and ringtones, you can choose which one to use for data usage, calling and other services.

Slim design

While the Galaxy A3 and A5 are sure to turn more heads with their impressive metal body, the Galaxy E5 isn’t bad either. It has got the familiar Samsung face which might not get a lot of love but the device is quite slim. It allows you to handle it easily despite its large size. It is also not very heavy and the weight distribution is near perfect. Despite the use of plastic, it feels solidly built in one’s hands.

Large battery

The battery life is a major concern for many people. If you are one of them, this could be the device for you. While the hardware is pretty average, it has got a large battery to power that. The 2400 mAh battery is pretty big to power the device. The phone should not only post some impressive standby times but also an impressive talk time. With a battery this big, it could easily survive a day of average usage and still have enough juice left that you won’t have to put it on charge immediately.

Camera

The bigger E7 comes with an impressive 13 megapixel primary camera and a 5 megapixel secondary camera. On the E5, the 5 megapixel secondary camera stays but the primary camera has dropped down to 8 megapixels. The primary camera is pretty much what you would expect from an 8 megapixel shooter. The camera app that it has got is Samsung’s own home brewed one and not the Google camera. There are various camera modes and filters that you can use on your photos.

The front camera is also very impressive. 5 megapixels is already pretty good for a front camera. They are trying to cash on the selfie wave and that is why along with a high resolution front camera, they have offered various selfie centric software features. It has got wide angles selfie mode, beatification mode, option to shoot rear camera selfies and animated GIFs. The device is expected to arrive with a price tag of around 19K which is decent for the device. But then being just okay won’t do the job now as the competition is tough and the rivals offer better value for money.
